Exercise and lows: what is actually going on?
Movement can change glucose during, after and overnight. Here is the useful mental model—not a dosing calculator.
Why movement changes things
Working muscles use glucose, and activity can make the body more sensitive to insulin. The effect depends on activity type, duration, timing and insulin already active.
The delayed effect
Glucose can fall hours after activity, including overnight. A CGM may help reveal patterns but does not replace a plan.
- Check according to your care plan before, during and after activity.
- Keep fast-acting treatment accessible.
- Tell a coach or exercise partner what help could look like.
- Get individual insulin and food guidance from your care team.
Know the emergency signs
Stop and treat a suspected low according to your plan. Confusion, seizure or unconsciousness requires help from another person and urgent care.
- Severe hypoglycaemia, loss of consciousness, trouble breathing, persistent vomiting, or suspected diabetic ketoacidosis can be life-threatening. Follow your emergency plan and seek urgent local medical care now.
